Rembrandt’s ‘De Nachtwacht’ serves as the starting point for the Detroit techno artist’s newly filmed performance

Jeff Mills has filmed a new performance inspired by Rembrandt’s ‘De Nachtwacht’ inside Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum.

Created by Audio Obscura as part of Amsterdam Dance Event’s 30th anniversary programme, the resulting 50-minute film takes Rembrandt’s celebrated painting as its starting point. The project was conceived and filmed inside the Rijksmuseum and will now return to the same institution for its first public screenings.

The film will be presented in the Rijksmuseum auditorium from Thursday, October 22 to Sunday, October 25, with three screenings taking place each day. The version of ‘De Nachtwacht’ seen in the film predates its latest restoration and therefore differs slightly from how the painting appears today.

The presentation marks a meeting point between Mills’ electronic music practice and one of the best-known works in the Rijksmuseum collection.

Admission is free, but capacity is limited for each screening. Sign up here before October 11 to reserve your spot.
