The Dutch trio are back with new material following a career that saw their 2016 album ‘Outer Edges’ developed into an interconnected audiovisual show
Dutch trio Noisia have reunited and returned to making music together, confirming their first performance since the conclusion of their farewell tour in 2022. The electronic group of Nik Roos, Martijn van Sonderen and Thijs de Vlieger will return to Amsterdam’s Melkweg on December 4, with further shows expected to follow.
The announcement comes exactly seven years after Noisia revealed their decision to disband. Reflecting on the circumstances surrounding that decision, the trio said, “Back then, we tried everything we could to get us out of the deadlock we were in. We had to admit the answer wasn’t in more trying, in more force. It was in letting go. We needed a full stop.” They added, “When we ended Noisia, we had no intention of returning to it. We went our separate ways, followed our individual interests, and started solo projects and new collaborations.”
Despite pursuing separate projects, Roos, van Sonderen and de Vlieger continued working from three studios in the same shared building and remained friends. “We’d sometimes find ourselves missing the feelings we’d get when sharing the Noisia music, and missing our lives around it. But talking about Noisia would often lead straight back to thoughts about those struggles and pressures from the past,” they explained.
That relationship gradually changed as the trio began looking back on their time together differently. “But then, more recently, we noticed those thoughts didn’t follow anymore. Memories of joy, beauty, and mutual respect started to outweigh the shadows of the past. Mentioning Noisia had lost its heaviness,” they said. “We’d get a little giddy in conversations about the things we could maybe do. We took up bouldering together. We got closer. And slowly, plans began to hatch.”
Those conversations eventually brought the three musicians back into the studio. “We started making music together again. That in turn made us crave the excitement of the stage, and the feeling of sharing our music with crowds,” they said. “We’ve grown a lot individually. We intuitively feel that our own endeavours can now co-exist with our Noisia project. Combining our forces again feels incredibly exciting now.”
Rather than immediately releasing the material they have been developing, Noisia intend to use their forthcoming performances as part of the creative process. “We want to experiment and play with our back catalogue and the material we’ve recently been making. Then, we want to test this new music at shows, bring our experiences from those shows into our production decisions, test it again, starting a positive feedback loop that way. So we’ll take our time before we release anything,” the trio explained.
Their return will begin at Melkweg, a venue with a longstanding connection to the group. “This new process will start at one of our most familiar and beloved venues: Melkweg Amsterdam, on December 4th. That’s the first step, with more to come. We hope to see you all there!” they said. The performance will be their first together since their farewell tour concluded at Lowlands in August 2022.
Beyond their work in electronic music and sound design, Noisia have also explored the relationship between sound, moving image and live production. A central example is ‘Outer Edges’, their 2016 studio album and the audiovisual performance concept developed around the record. The production was conceived as an interconnected system in which music, custom visuals and lighting could be synchronised and controlled live, extending the album into a performance environment rather than treating its visual component as a separate accompaniment.
The trio later described the production as an “audiovisual instrument”, built with collaborators Roy Gerritsen, Merijn Hos and Manuel Rodrigues before the performance itself was developed around the system. Its custom visual material included work created by Roos, who VJ’d during the show, while de Vlieger used part of his modular set-up on stage and van Sonderen controlled the progression of the music through Ableton. The project subsequently became ‘Outer Edges ∴ Live’, released in 2020 as a recording of the audiovisual performance.
