The new space combines a 48-speaker spatial sound system with infrastructure supporting multicamera video production
Apple has announced the opening of Apple Music Hall, a 600-capacity live music venue at its London headquarters in Battersea Power Station, bringing live performance, immersive audio and broadcast production together in a purpose-built space. The venue will host intimate concerts that can be recorded in Spatial Audio and livestreamed to audiences worldwide, with an opening date set for 28 September.
Situated within the historic power station on the River Thames, Apple Music Hall has been designed to accommodate different performance formats while providing artists with the technical infrastructure to produce audio and video content directly from the venue. Its 38-foot-wide stage can be reconfigured for conventional front-facing performances or in-the-round arrangements, offering flexibility in how artists engage with their audiences.
The hall features a 48-speaker spatial sound system positioned around the audience, allowing performances created for the format to be experienced in an immersive listening environment. The system is complemented by two professional recording and mixing studios, where live performances can be captured as multitrack recordings and mixed in Spatial Audio, either in real time or following the show.
Video production is also integrated into the venue's infrastructure, with connections for at least 16 cameras feeding into a dedicated broadcast control room. The system supports simultaneous recording using conventional broadcast cameras and iPhones, enabling artists to produce multicamera footage alongside their audio recordings. According to Apple, performers will be able to leave the venue with a finished Spatial Audio recording, a broadcast-ready mix and video material from a single concert.
Speaking to BBC News, Apple Music vice president Oliver Schusser said: “We're going to run the venue like a venue, with tickets and everything, but the sole purpose for us is to do great work with artists, to connect artists with fans, and to broadcast the content on Apple Music. We have really no interest in trying to be in the way of anyone else, and that's one of the main reasons it's a smaller space.”
The venue's architectural design draws on the industrial heritage of Battersea Power Station, incorporating exposed brickwork, fluted arches and bronze balconies inspired by the building's historic windows. A large glass wall connects the interior visually with the surrounding concourse and the River Thames, placing the performance space within the wider architectural setting of Apple's London headquarters.
Beyond its concert facilities, the development also includes new studios for Apple Music Radio. The platform's London-based presenters and programmes have relocated from King's Cross to Battersea, where they will continue broadcasting live interviews, music premieres and artist-led programming.
Apple Music's global creative director Zane Lowe described the new venue as an extension of the platform's relationship with artists and listeners. “At Apple Music, we care deeply about music, the artists who make it, and their life stories. We’re always looking for new opportunities to connect the artists and the fans because we are fans. What better way to celebrate this relationship than a new music venue where we get to experience amazing music in an amazing space and share it with the world. Great music and memories will be made at Apple Music Hall,” he said in Apple's announcement.
The opening also brings a new physical dimension to Apple Music's existing live music activities, allowing the platform to host performances while producing spatial recordings and broadcast content within the same facility. The combination of a reconfigurable stage, immersive sound system and integrated recording infrastructure provides artists with a setting in which live performances can be captured and distributed to audiences beyond the venue.
Further details of Apple Music Hall's opening programme, including its first performing artists and ticket availability, are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
