The collaboration begins with Vhils carving a piano and concludes with a collector’s edition that presents ‘Home’ as both a vinyl album and an artwork
Portuguese pianist and composer Hugo Oliveira has collaborated with visual artist Vhils on a limited-edition release accompanying “Home”, Oliveira's debut solo album, presenting it as both a vinyl album and a collectible artwork.
Presented by Underdogs, the edition marks the first collaboration between Oliveira and Vhils, the internationally recognised artistic alias of Alexandre Farto. Developed around “Home”, the project explores the relationship between sound, material and artistic intervention, translating the album into a sculptural object.
At the centre of the collaboration is a piano carved by Vhils, which served as a meeting point between the creative practices of the two artists. While Oliveira's work unfolds through resonance and composition, Vhils' process reveals hidden layers through carving and excavation, creating a dialogue between sonic and physical expression.
The collector's edition comprises a pair of vinyl records, recorded at Abbey Road Studios, housed inside a laser-etched laminated wood composite box. The carved surface reflects Vhils' intervention on the piano, with the box's hinges and feet also derived from elements of the instrument itself, extending the project's visual and material language.
Limited to 100 editions plus 10 artist's proofs, the signed and numbered collector's edition reflects on the relationship between sound, memory and material through a single work.
