Suspended 30 metres above the audience by a giant crane, the Portuguese duo transformed the festival's closing show into a breathtaking audiovisual spectacle
MXGPU, the collaborative project uniting Portuguese electronic music mainstays Moullinex and GPU Panic, delivered one of the most striking live moments of this year's Primavera Sound Porto, bringing the festival's main stage programme to a close with an ambitious aerial performance suspended 30 metres above the audience.
Rather than treating the show as a conventional DJ performance, MXGPU transformed the festival finale into a large-scale audiovisual installation. Hoisted by a towering crane and floating directly in front of the main stage, the duo performed high above thousands of festival-goers, creating an immersive spectacle where choreography, architecture, lighting and music converged into a single spatial experience.
Reflecting on the landmark performance, the duo shared:
“It's been little over a year since we merged into MXGPU. We've been dedicating ourselves to the music and everything that surrounds it: visually, physically, in every format it takes. But the raison d'être of this project are the live shows. We strive to give audiences a unique experience, much like the ones we had growing up and watching live music. In this day and age, we feel it's important to highlight experiences where humanity is front and centre.”
They continued by explaining the philosophy that has shaped the project since its inception:
“From the very beginning, we've made no concessions around the way we present our music live. Our wildest dreams are always followed with, 'OK, how do we make it happen?', and the team that surrounds us have been enabling bigger and bigger adventures. This has been true for the promoters, organisers and audiences who believed in the vision and joined us.”
Speaking specifically about the Primavera Sound Porto commission, MXGPU added:
“Primavera Sound Porto dared us to take it up a notch. Suspended 30 metres above you by a gigantic crane, floating right in front of the main stage, closing the festival. Weeks of planning, risk calculations, endless details: all to make us fly. We got to work. And history happened.
Watching a sea of people dancing from above as we played 'Take Me Home'. Lightning in the distance. That warm June Saturday in Porto. That moment, those smiles, that view, will always live in our hearts.
Thank you to everyone who made this possible. Thank you to everyone who was there.
The creative direction for the performance was conceived by MXGPU themselves, with stage, lighting and visual design realised by Pavel Zmunchila. The ambitious production was co-produced in close collaboration with the Primavera Sound team.
